A 90-year-old man is defying age stereotypes and inspiring seniors across East Hampshire with his dedication to fitness.

Two years ago, following a GP referral for an Achilles injury, Stanley Watkins began his journey at Taro Leisure Centre in Petersfield. Which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with East Hampshire District Council (EHDC).

Despite challenges such as osteoarthritis in his knee, Stanley has demonstrated remarkable progress and unwavering dedication to his fitness regime.

"When I started, it was quite challenging," he said.

"But I've come a long way. Now, I'm at the gym three times a week, focusing on lower body exercises twice and upper body once. It's been tremendously beneficial for me."

For Stanley – who lives locally in Petersfield - the benefits extend beyond physical health.

He added: "My wife died 12 years ago, so the gym is great for social meetings and making friends. It gives me something to do and has been very good for me.

“I have given it a go for the past two years and found out how much better I feel in body and mind. It is never too late.”

Robbie Campbell, activity and wellbeing manager at the centre, has been instrumental in Stanley's fitness journey.

Robbie said: "When Stan first came to us, he struggled with basic movements and had very limited mobility. It was challenging at first, but his determination was incredible.

“Now, two years later, we've seen remarkable improvements. We've worked on Stan's speed, his ability to climb stairs, and his overall fitness and balance. He can even push up on his tiptoes now – something he couldn't dream of doing when he started.

“Stan's journey really shows that it's never too late to start prioritising your health. His progress isn't just about physical fitness - it's about maintaining independence and enhancing overall quality of life.

“In East Hampshire, where social isolation among seniors is a significant concern, Stan's story highlights how facilities like Taro Leisure Centre can be a lifeline.

“We're not just providing exercise equipment, it's about giving people like Stan a place to come, meet others, and stay active.

“He's a great example of how important it is for people his age to get out there and use these facilities. It's doing wonders for their health and happiness."

Stanley's story aligns with Everyone Active's annual ‘Age is Just a Number’ campaign. Now in its fifth year, it aims to inspire more seniors to embrace an active lifestyle.

As part of the campaign, free resources are being offered to help seniors start their fitness journey. Including beginner exercise guides and exclusive weekly video content through the website.

Cllr Richard Millard, EHDC leader, commented: “The age is just a number campaign is one of the fantastic initiatives being delivered by Everyone Active to encourage residents to get active in the district.

“Stanley’s story is inspiring and illustrates the positive impact that our leisure centres and partnership with Everyone Active is making to the health and wellbeing of our residents.”
