Petersfield’s Town Crier has reflected on her time in the role as she reached two years of service.

Faye Thompson has been ringing in events and reading out proclamations since early 2023 and has certainly made her mark in the community, including nationally and internationally.

From appearing at local events and supporting charities, to representing the town in UK competitions, and featuring in a book of Town Criers from all over the world.

Speaking to The Petersfield Post, Faye explained how it’s about the community and making others aware of the “wonderful town” she gets to represent.

She said: “I'm really just wanting to help the trader’s communication and the people that live in Petersfield and I like the fundraising, helping the mayors and people.

“One of the wonderful things that I was asked to do was the peace treaty on September 1st last year between Gosport and Portsmouth, and I just thought, ‘wow, I can't believe I'm doing this!’

“I work at a school doing relaxation and mindfulness and I want to feel that while I’m in the capacity I've got for however long that's going to be, that we can give hope to children and to older people as well.”

Faye is also accompanied in her work by her husband and deputy Town Crier Martin Johnson and Peter S. Field, also known as Woolly. The mascot gets placed in shop windows to support local businesses and promote Petersfield, and Faye even started a knit group after learning about the history of the town’s wool trade.

Faye added: “I never thought this would be a job, I was quietest person in class, so never underestimate anybody!”

Petersfield Town Council commented: “As we celebrate two years of Faye’s service, we extend our deepest thanks for her passion, hard work, and unwavering commitment.”
