Volunteers in Petersfield have launched this year’s Poppy Appeal in the town square.

The Petersfield branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) kicked off the annual fundraising event with a few words from town crier Faye Thompson.

Town mayor cllr Lesley Farrow was also in attendance to receive the first poppy for this year’s campaign for Veterans and their families.

Last year, the local RBL raised more than £30,000 and the branch hopes to try and raise the same amount or more. However, there is concern about the future of Poppy Appeals as more members and volunteers are needed to keep the Legion going.

RBL chairman and deputy mayor Cllr Chris Paige, told The Post that he is actually one of the youngest members and that it would be great to see younger generations come on board. The legion welcomes everyone, regardless if you have served in the Armed Forces or not.
