The Petersfield branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) may have to close.

It has been in operation since May 1921 and continues to be a big part of the community. Such as raising money for the annual Poppy Appeal through member efforts and residents - nearly £33,500 has been collected for this year.

However, without more new members and people willing to support the branch outside of the Poppy Appeal, it may not be able to continue.

Petersfield RBL chairman and deputy mayor, Cllr Chris Paige, said: “We currently have a membership of 49 and I feel that if we don't do more to increase awareness of the branch, then I do truly see us having no option but to lay-up our standard.

“I do have my own ideas but unfortunately, I need active support to achieve these. You don't have to have served to be a member - just the desire to support those who have.”

While the gifting of the branded Gazebo by the Town Council has helped raise the branch’s profile alongside attending community events. New ideas and activities to help boost the branch’s profile can only be done if more people sign up.

Only recently, secretary David Lloyd was invited to Churcher’s College for their Biennial inspection by Lt Col Alex Rivet. Demonstrating how valued the RBL still is to the Petersfield community and the important role members play.
