Fans of Petersfield Town have raised nearly £10,000 for an amputee after following the cup trail to Portsmouth.

The road to Wembley may have ended at the first hurdle for The Rams at Baffins Milton Rovers, but their fans were definitely winners off the pitch on Saturday, August 3.

Some 21 fundraisers gathered at Love Lane at 7.30am to walk the 18 miles to the BMC Stadium in support of Darren Hoare, father of first team manager Connor.

The former lost his right arm and needed eight operations following a horrific accident at work in May which affected the use of his leg and impacted his mental health.

His son, Connor, launched a www.gofundme.com page ahead of the ‘Ram-ble’ in a bid to raise £80,000 for a top-of-the-range prosthetic limb for his father.

And the appeal has been enthusiastically backed, with nearly £10,000 donated at the time of writing from the fundraising trek and supporters.

The Ram-ble from PTFC to Portsmouth was part of the bid with Connor joining the fundraisers on the Petersfield to Rowlands Castle leg.

It wasn’t a walk in the park for all the fundraisers as some wore questionable footwear and clothing while three failed to escape from a pub enroute.

But it’s the taking part that counts – and getting close to the £10,000 mark is a great result, despite the 5-0 scoreline on the day.

“It was really well supported by Connor’s family and friends and it was a really good show,” said PTFC spokesperson, John Wade-Palmer.

“Some of the walkers wore inappropriate footwear and a couple wore shorts, so they got a shock when we went through nettles and long grass, but it was all good.”
