Bordon Petanque Club’s nine-a-side squad have won the Southern Counties Petanque Association’s final competition of the year – the Silver Salver Trophy.
The Silver Salver Trophy is one of the oldest trophies in the south of England for petanque clubs.
The nine-a-side squad, comprising of three teams of three, travelled to Fareham Petanque Club, where ten clubs from across the region were ready to battle it out for the trophy.
Some of the opposition squads included England and regional petanque players, and players of all ages.
The format was three games for each team in the morning and, following seeding, another three games in the afternoon.
The Bordon squad, which contained a mix of experienced and fairly-new players, fought hard throughout the day and lost only one round of games – to local rivals Crondall Petanque Club.
This meant that the Bordon team needed to win the last round, against strong and experienced contenders Handcross Petanque Club.
Bordon came out winners and were able to lift the trophy, with Frank Charlesworth, Chris Peat and Mike Head remaining unbeaten on the day to clinch the salver for Bordon.
The second Bordon team of three comprised Lesley Crofts, Robin Coulson and James Ellis and the third team comprised Colin Crofts and Jackie and Dave Gair.
Bordon Petanque Club’s name will now go on the Silver Salver Trophy for the first time in 35 years.
Bordon Petanque Club have expanded rapidly over the past few years to become one of the largest clubs in the southern region, with eight teams playing in local and regional leagues.
The club are always looking for new members.
Practise sessions are currently held at 10.30am on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at the Bordon & Oakhanger Sports Club and at 7.30pm on Thursday evenings at the Enterprise Park. No previous experience is needed and initially the club will supply boules and coaching if needed.
