Alton continued their good form with an impressive 3-0 victory at home to Tooting & Mitcham United in the Combined Counties Premier Division South.
Goals from Liam Marshall and Siph Mdalolose (2) deservedly gave the Brewers the three points in front of a crowd of 219 at Anstey Park Enclosure.
The hosts were quick out of the traps and took the lead in the ninth minute when Marshall intercepted a back pass and rounded Tooting keeper Toby McKimm before calmly rolling the ball into the empty net from a tight angle.
The Brewers nearly doubled their advantage on 24 minutes when Owen Tanner intercepted a loose Tooting pass on the halfway line and drove forward into the box before firing his right-foot shot over the bar.
Alton then went desperately close to a second two minutes later after McKimm dropped a cross under pressure from Mdalolose. Mdalolose set the ball back for Tanner, whose shot was blocked on the line. The rebound fell to Marshall, whose effort was superbly cleared off the line.
The hosts went close again in the 28th minute when Marshall played a nice pass out to Adam Poynter on the left, but Poynter’s right-foot shot was well held by McKimm.
The Brewers got the second goal their display deserved on 37 minutes when Tanner set the ball for Mdalolose, whose first-time shot had too much power for McKimm and beat the Tooting keeper at his near post.
Alton continued to be on the front foot at the start of the second half and nearly went 3-0 up in the 52nd minute when Poynter’s corner was met by George Bennett, whose powerful header was superbly parried away by McKimm.
Marshall then went close for the Brewers on 64 minutes when he worked a yard of space on the edge of the box and hit a right-foot shot which was held by McKimm.
The hosts continued to create chances and nearly scored a third in the 76th minute when Poynter played a superb pass out to Marshall on the right wing, and Marshall cut inside and hit a powerful shot which rattled the Tooting crossbar.
The Brewers brought youngster Tommy Whitby off the bench and he made an immediate impact when he was fouled in the Tooting box and won Alton a penalty.
Mdalolose stepped up from the spot and calmly tucked his 85th-minute penalty away via the inside of the post to put the hosts 3-0 up.
Alton comfortably saw out the rest of the match to earn a fourth successive win and continue their good form.
Next up for Alton is a trip to Guildford City in the Combined Counties Premier Division South on Wednesday, March 5 (7.30pm kick-off).
