A PETERSFIELD woman is celebrating after winning the British Women’s Classic Championship under 72kg powerlifting competition at the weekend.

Suzie Argile set three British records on her way to victory, as she squatted 170kg, benched 100kg and lifted a total weight of 452.5kg.

The only British record she didn’t beat was her deadlift of 182.5kg.

Suzie, who is a student paramedic at the University of Surrey, said: “It was only my third competition but I knew I had a chance to win with the numbers I’ve been hitting in the gym.

“I reached my target, and that was good enough to win.

“I took up powerlifting about a year-and-a-half ago, and I won my first competition at the South East Championships in November.

“I also won my second competition in March.

“I train five times a week, and I normally train in Guildford at the Surrey Sports Park and at the Nuffield Health Gym. I don’t have a coach but Carl Louden saw potential in me and got me into the sport and he has helped me out massively.”

Suzie hopes her performance will get her noticed by the British selectors.

She said: “There were a few British lifters at the championship on the weekend, so I should be on the British team’s radar.

“Hopefully, I get selected for a British squad and make it through the selection process and get picked for the British team.

“I would love to be at the world championships in Canada next year.”
