Petersfield produced a superb performance to earn an emphatic 46-18 win at Wimborne in Regional Two South Central on Saturday.
Petersfield forced a penalty lineout early on from which they secured the ball and Dan Sargent burst through to claim the opening try. Nick Blumlein added the extras.
Wimborne hammered at the visitors’ try line and were rewarded in quick succession with two penalty attempts which they elected to kick.
George Davis then accepted a pass 30 metres out and outpaced the home defence to score an unconverted try in the left-hand corner.
Wimborne replied with their own unconverted try at the end of the first quarter.
Oli Hunt and Liam Perkins then combined to drive forward and set up a ruck from where Sargent shunted his way the six metres to the line to score another unconverted try.
For the next 20 minutes, including the first five of the second half, neither team troubled the scoreboard until Davis was tackled 15 metres short.
From the ruck the ball passed by hand and kick pass to the right wing and after three phases back to the left where Karter Whittock was on hand to take the final pass and power his way through the defence to score a converted try.
From a Wimborne five-metre scrum Petersfield then won the ball against the head with a powerful drive for Perkins to pick up at the base and power over to score an unconverted try.
Wimborne replied with a converted try, but Blumlein kicked a penalty from in front of the posts to make it 32-18.
McLean then received a pass and danced through the home defence to touch down under the posts for a converted try.
Will Mathews’ excellent try completed the scoring.
Petersfield will host Andover at Penns Place on Saturday (3pm kick-off).
