Black smoke billowed up into the sky from a fire at the John Huntley scrapyard south of Petersfield.

The Post received reports of the blaze in Greenway Lane around 2pm. Fire crews said the pile of 3,000 tonnes of scrap metal was “well alight” when they arrived. Fire appliances from Petersfield, Horndean, Emsworth, Liphook, Cosham and Havant were dispatched along with support vehicles.

Relief teams took over from those who were first on scene and water carriers and the aerial ladder were used to assist with the incident.

The scrapyard said: “All staff are safe and nobody was injured which is the main thing.”

The Causeway was closed between the A3M roundabout and Mapledurham Lane and was expected to remain closed for the next 24 hours.

Railway lines between Petersfield and Havant were temporarily closed before re-opening mid-afternoon with trains running at reduced speed.

On Facebook, one person commented: “Drove by it just before the road closed... was roaring with flames! One fire appliance in attendance with two more en route. Nasty black smoke.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown at the time of writing.
