Petersfield shoppers have gone the extra mile to help poverty-stricken children in a South American nation.

A little bit of Colombia came to the town centre on Saturday (June 1) as the Ministry of Children held its annual Funday event in Rams Walk.

The IMC was launched by Joan and Terry Thraves 30 years after seeing first-hand the plight of street children in the Colombian capital, Bogota.

Proceeds from the charity have funded food programmes, built two farms for seriously-abused youngsters and enabled children to go to school in the Latin American country.

This year’s event raised more than £700 with highlights including the ever-popular laying of a “mile of pennies” near the entrance to Waitrose.

Shoppers could also buy merchandise made by Colombian ladies with the event also including a tombola, lucky dip, face painting, plant sale and homemade cake stall.
