Farnham Town manager Paul Johnson praised his side’s performance after they beat Raynes Park Vale 2-1 in the Isthmian League South Central Division on Saturday.

The win moved league leaders Farnham 12 points clear of third-placed Raynes Park.

“It was a big game in terms of keeping Raynes Park at arm’s length,” said Johnson.

“We've played them twice and got six points, so we’re really happy.

“To get the double done early in the season sets a good marker.

“It was an enjoyable game. I think the referee played his part, in that he let a lot go. Both teams were slightly aggrieved but it made it a good game.”

Farnham had to come from behind to pick up the three points, and Johnson was pleased that his side retained their composure after going behind.

“I thought we were in control of the game,” said Johnson.

“We had some good opportunities out wide and getting the ball across the box, but we didn't follow it up well enough.

“The goal was a bit of a sucker punch. We had to dust ourselves down. We were the better side.

“At half-time we said we've got to stay composed, make the options a bit simpler in the final third and make sure we stay in control of the situation and don't get flustered with what goes on around us.

“I thought the boys were excellent in the second half at doing that.

“I thought we were going to win the game – it felt like it was coming.

“The chances were starting to fall. Once the first goal came the momentum was with us and it was just whether or not we could get a winner.”

Goalkeeper Hugo Sobte made his Farnham debut after joining the club from Slough Town, and Johnson was pleased with his performance.

“Hugo didn't have much to do but what he did with his feet and his distribution was excellent,” said Johnson.

“He set us away for a lot of our chances. He had a solid start.”

Fellow new recruit Ben Purcell made his home debut off the bench in the second half, and Johnson was delighted with the midfielder’s all-action display.

“The fans got a glimpse of Ben – he's going to be good for us,” said Johnson.

“He's got the whole package. He's a proper football player and we're glad we've got him.”

A big crowd of 987 packed The Memorial Ground on Saturday, and Johnson was grateful for the support.

“It was a great turnout,” said Johnson. “We felt it – especially in the second half.”
